#TO2015 - Victories for Cuba, Puerto Rico, Canada and USA on the opening day of Women's Basketball

TORONTO (2015 Pan American Games) - The first day of Women's Basketball in the Pan American Games in Toronto 2015, handed victories for Cuba over Argentina, 68-55, Puerto Rico over the Dominican Republic, 76-54, Canada over Venezuela, 101-38 and United States over Brazil, 75-69.

The first game of the discipline of women's basketball faced the Cuban and Argentine teams. Cuba quickly found their rhythm and went ahead on the scoreboard with an 11-point lead, at the end of the first quarter.

Argentina tried to close the gap but the Cuban maintained the lead until the final whistle, to take the win 68-55.

The defending champs of women's basketball at the Pan American Games, Puerto Rico, made their debut in this year's continental tournament, facing their rivals of the Caribbean, the Dominican Republic.

From the opening tip, the Puerto Ricans settled in their game and positioned on top of the scoreboard. Jerry Batista's team did not lower its intensity and continued to increase the lead, to start the tournaments with a comfortable victory, 76-54.

Venezuela entered the Ryerson University Arena, to face host the Pan American Games and the FIBA Americas Women’s Championship, Canada. Canada demonstrated its strength from the initial jump, implementing a 23-8 first set.

Canada won the remaining quarters by a difference of double digits and with seven players scoring in double figures, headed for a dominant victory over the South American team, 101-38.

In the last turn, the national teams of Brazil and the United States clashed. The United States got a slight lead of 8 points in the first set. Brazil entered rhythm and leveled the game for the rest of the quarters, but Luiz Zanon’s team could not discount the difference established during the first ten minutes of the game.

The victory belonged to the World Champion, United States, 75-69.

13:30 - Puerto Rico vs. Brazil
18:00 - Argentina vs. Canada
21:00 - Dominican Republic vs. United States of America
