#FIBAAmericas2015 - Argentina and Mexico secure semifinal spots after Day 7
9/8/2015

Mexico City, Mexico (2015 FIBA Americas Championship) - Both Argentina and Mexico secured semifinal spots in the 2015 FIBA Americas Championship after winning in Day 7 of the continental competition. Canada and Puerto Rico also won.

Argentina dominated Panama, 84-57 and secured a spot in the Semi-Finals of the 2015 FIBA Americas Championship. The team coached by Sergio Hernandez finalized the proceedings in the third quarter with a collective performance that was far superior to their rivals, for a 25 – 10 quarter. In the fourth quarter Hernandez rotated his players, never loosing intensity for the 84 – 57 victory.

In what has become a well-known rivalry from the Caribbean, Puerto Rico claimed its first victory of the second phase over the Dominican Republic, 98-92, to keep the illusion of getting into the semifinals or, at least, to be located in fifth place, to pass into the Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

"We continue to fight for the qualification. We know we have to go one game at a time. Dominican Republic is a very good team and we were worn out from the match with Mexico, but the team showed great commitment to stay with the victory,” said Ramon Clemente, who accumulated 15 points and 6 rebounds in the victory.

Jay Triano’s team once again showed its power, by defeating Uruguay, 109-82, in a match they dominated from the initial jump to the last buzzer.

The power forward of the Orlando Magic, Andrew Nicholson, was the man of the match with 15 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists.

After the match, NBA Rookie of the Year, Andrew Wiggins said: "Uruguay was a tough opponent but this team does not give up and luckily we succeeded. For the match against Mexico we know it will be a tremendous atmosphere. We are not accustomed to the level of hearing and hearing is but the more I feel bigger as a player.”

And finally, Mexico closed the day by securing a spot in the semifinals after winning, 73-70, in a game that they were losing for 39 minutes.

Venezuela gave a brilliant fight showing their structure on both sides of the court, however four points from Jorge Gutierrez in the last 9 seconds of the match sealed the win for the hosts.

The two teams that reach the Final of the 2015 FIBA Americas Championship will qualify directly to the 2016 Rio Olympics, while the teams that come in third, fourth and fifth will clinch places in the 2016 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments (OQTs).
