Qualification system for the ten countries:

Zone'sQualification (10 Teams)
Of the 10 participant teams, 8 qualified after playing in the qualificationtournaments from their respective Zones celebrated during 2008.

  • Centrobasket (Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Panama, Cuba)
  • Sudamericano (Brazil, Uruguay, Venezuela, Paraguay)

Argentina was awarded this tournament so another team from South America is added. Paraguayfinished fifth in South America and is granted a spot in the tournament. Canadaautomatically qualified as they are one of the two representatives of the NorthAmerica Zone. The United States does not need to play since they won Gold inthe 2010 FIBA World Championship which gave them a spot for the 2012 Olympics.

Competition System:

With the participation of ten (10) teams, and under FIBA's current Games Rules,this Championship will be played in three (3) rounds. If there is a tie for thesame position during the First and Second Rounds, the respective systemestablished by FIBA for that kind of situations will be also utilize. The teamswill be divided in two (2) groups of five (5) teams each.

The best four teams per group enter the quarterfinals where they will play fourgames against the teams that entered from the other group. The quarterfinalsare scheduled from September 1-4. The best four in the standings at the end ofthe quarterfinals will qualify into the FIBA World Championship and thesemifinals. The semifinals are going to be played on September 5 and the finalsthe next day.
